Lions of Science

Lions of Science is a charitable organisation registered in Berlin/Germany and a new internet platform aiming to yearly award prizes to East-African students for their creative and innovative projects. Students can choose between different categories – like e.g. Health, Environment, ICT/Media, Engineering – and benefit from the network, engaging with a world-wide audience and international partnerships.

The submitted projects should enrich society and contribute towards improving standards of living or simplify living conditions in the respective community, ‘Africa’ or the international community. An internal jury will decide on a shortlist of projects. In a second step any visitors to the site then have the opportunity to ‘like’ the shortlisted projects and discuss them through social media platforms. The Lions of Science Jury will then discuss the results and finally decide about the three winning projects after the shortlisted student’s presentations life on stage at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi – the Innovation Slam.

In 2013 the Lions of Science Awards took place for the first time and it was a long and exciting evening! After all presentations the jury finally came up with the following three winners:

1. Ken-Andrew Muthui – Integrated Sonar Echo Eye

2. Michael Rembesa – The Smart Dumpster

3. Isaac Jumba – Hostel Hook-App

As winner prizes it is generally aimed to deliver assistance for the further development and implementation of the winning projects and to make them marketable in case of the appropriate potential. Now the Lions gate comes into play. Further prices are e.g. language courses and internships.

Additionally to the competition itself the projects and website offer the opportunity to engage with an African legacy of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. The ambition is also to show how much more there is to ‘Africa’ than just poverty and violence.

Africa is currently changing dynamically  and for an increasing number of analysts the continent’s future looks highly promising. In order to foster self-sufficient, social and economic progress, it needs home grown solutions and scientific creativity. Therefore  Lions of Science aims to encourage a start today, for the matters of today and tomorrow. The spirit of Lions of Science and the website aim to inspire and promote young people exploring the scientific world, as well as foster the social and political appreciation for scientific research and adequate capacity building.
